Permanent Makeup FAQ: Your Questions Answered

April 14, 20253 min read

Thinking about getting permanent makeup but have a few concerns? You’re not alone! I've picked the most common questions my clients had before booking their first appointment, whether it’s for nano brows, microblading, powder brows, or lip blushing. Here, we’re answering the most common doubts and fears to help you feel confident in your decision.

✨ 1. Is permanent makeup really permanent?

Not exactly! Permanent makeup is actually semi-permanent. While it lasts much longer than traditional makeup, it does fade over time. Depending on the technique, your skin type and lifestyle, results can last anywhere from 1 to 3 years before requiring a touch-up.

✨ 2. Does it hurt?

I’ll start with this: Many of my clients actually fall asleep during the process! Pain tolerance varies, but most clients describe the sensation as a tolerable discomfort rather than an extreme pain. With the right techniques, we work to minimize your discomfort, making the process much more skin-friendly.

✨ 3. What’s the difference between nano brows, microblading, and powder brows?

Each technique gives a different look, and the best one for you depends on your skin type and personal style:

  • Nano Brows: Creates a soft, natural-looking brow. We “draw” hair by hair using a machine that deposits pigment in tiny strokes. It's a great option for all skin types, including oily, mature and sensitive skin, and offers a long-lasting, well-defined look. It’s the latest and more refined technique in permanent makeup.

  • Microblading: As Nano Brows, this technique creates a soft, natural brow. We use a manual tool to make fine marks in the skin, giving the effect of realistic brow hairs. It's best suited for normal to dry skin.

  • Powder Brows: Gives a soft, filled-in look, like a gentle makeup effect. This technique works for all skin types, including oily skin, and is especially great if you prefer a more defined brow that still looks natural. The intensity can be adjusted depending on your preference!

4. How long does the healing process take?

Healing time varies: eyebrows take 4-6 weeks, while lips take 6-8 weeks. In the first 7-14 days, you may notice some scabbing and colour changes as your skin heals. Around weeks 2-4, a 'ghosting' phase happens where the colour looks very light—some clients even think it disappeared! This is completely normal. By week 3 or 4, the pigment resurfaces, revealing your final result.

✨ 5. Will my brows or lips look too dark at first?

Yes, the colour appears darker immediately after the procedure, but don’t worry! It fades by about 30-40% during the healing process, leaving you with a natural-looking result. If you want more colour, we can apply it during your touch-up session.

✨ 6. Can I wear makeup after the procedure?

You should avoid applying makeup directly on the treated area for at least 7-10 days to prevent infection and allow proper healing.

✨ 7. What if I don’t like the results?

A thorough consultation ensures we choose the best shape and colour for you. However, if adjustments are needed, touch-ups can refine the look. Over time, the pigment naturally fades, and corrections can be made if necessary.

✨ 8. Who should avoid permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup may not be suitable for individuals who are:

  • Pregnant or nursing

  • Taking blood thinners

  • Prone to keloid scarring

  • Undergoing chemotherapy (consult your doctor first)

  • Having active skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis) near the treatment area

✨ 9. How do I maintain my permanent makeup?

To extend the longevity of your permanent makeup:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure (use SPF!)

  • Follow aftercare instructions

  • Schedule touch-ups as recommended

✨ 10. Will my brows turn red or blue over time?

No, we use high-quality and modern pigments that are designed to fade naturally over time without shifting to unnatural tones. Choosing the right pigment for your skin tone and working with an experienced artist minimizes this risk.
